journey to tembok

Charting a course through the legends surrounding the northeastern coast of the island where Spa Village Resort Tembok, Bali rests, this journey winds through the ancient province of Baling-Kang which arose in the 12th century from the love between a Balinese prince and Chinese scholar's daughter, Kang Ching Wee. Their union was opposed by many, and when the priest of Shiva refused to consent to their marriage, the prince abdicated his throne and left with her to form their own kingdom, Baling-Kang.

Passing through the Buleleng regency, the route takes you past Pura Negara Gamburanglayang. A 13th century temple that came to be when the nearby village Kuta Baning served as an ancient trading port. A place to rest, restock and trade, merchants and sailors from across the seas arrived to find this temple filled with shrines for their different faiths, all side by side within the same sacred ground.

While the once-great province of Baling-Kang no longer exists in the eyes of the government, to the people of Tembok it still endures as the holy places of Baling-Kang continue to be a part of their spiritual constellation of temples, involved in every major religious ritual. Pura Dalem Balingkang is one of the temples that lie on this spiritual route. Within its walls, shrines reflect both Balinese and Chinese influences. A gentle tribute to a queen who missed her homeland.

A site of some reverence for the Hindu Balinese, the Tirtagangga water palace resides within the Karangasem regency. Tirtagangga translates to 'water from the Ganges'. Built in the late 40s, while much was destroyed in 1963 by the volcanic eruption at Mount Agung, it has been lovingly restored. With its lush gardens, bathing pools fed by cool springs and beautifully carved water statues all surrounded by green paddy fields and the outline of the mountains beyond, this water palace remains the legacy of the last king of Karangasem.

Before journey's end, you approach the village of Tembok, where the resort resides. Once considered the Eastern gate of Singaraja when it was part of the Baling-Kang province, Tembok means 'the wall' and still divides the regencies of Buleleng and Karangasem.

The Journey to Tembok was conceived as a unique travel journal in collaboration with Chang Fee Ming, a highly regarded self-taught artist, showcasing a collection of moments, a treasure map to places of inspiration where the journey itself is as important as the destination.

MORE ABOUT CHANG FEE MING

dances for the gods

Balinese dance remains an ancient tradition that forms part of the religious and artistic expression amongst the Balinese people. Dynamic and intensely expressive, Balinese dance conveys a sense of drama and spectacle, some recounting legends, while others revealing slices of life.

A rich variety of dance forms and styles prevail in Bali, each village with its own traditional performance that narrate stories unique to their particular dance troupe and area. Part of their daily lives, Balinese dances are not only performed for people but also to please their deities and ancestral spirits. The most popular and important dances are the ones performed in praise of the gods and to welcome guests.

Spa Village Resort Tembok, Bali together with the nearby village of Tembok, would like to share this rich heritage with you.

The Kecak

THE KECAK

A spectacle of sound and light, flickering torches illuminate a chorus of men, whose voices are the orchestral accompaniment to a dramatic story told in dance. Complex and varied chants echo in sync to swaying movements. The only other music to rhythmically accompany them are the beats of their palms hitting their chests, thighs or other parts of their bodies.

Created in the 1930s, the kecak dance was a collaborative effort between Walter Spies, a German musician and painter, and Wayan Limbak, a Balinese dancer. They adapted the kecak, originally a trance ritual accompanied by a male chorus, to a drama in dance based on an excerpt from the epic Sanskrit poem, Ramayana.

Amidst this living stage of movement and vocals, a storyteller narrates the epic tale that unfolds in dance. A fragment from the Ramayana, the dance charts the abduction of Sita, the beautiful wife of the god Rama by Rahwana, the lustful evil demon who desires her and the trials and challenges Rama and his brother, Laksamana, must face to ensure her rescue as well as the help they receive from Hanoman, a monkey general and Garuda, the king of all birds.
The Legong

THE LEGONG

Characterised by intricate finger movements, complicated footwork, expressive gestures and facial expressions, the legong is a refined dance traditionally performed in royal courts by young girls who begin their training from the age of five. A gamelan orchestra provides the background accompaniment and the two main dancers often also have a third dancer referred to as a condong or attendant. Her role is similar to that of narrator; she sets the scene, introduces the characters, presents the dancers with their fans and on occasion, plays supporting roles.

The classical legong enacts several traditional stories in dance, all told in an elaborate, stylised pantomime. Typically these stories feature scenes from nature or capture moments in time. The Manuk Rawa portrays the beautiful and deadly nature of the long-legged wild birds that inhabit the mangroves, while the Oleg Tambulilingan, created by the Balinese dance maestro I Ketut Maria in 1952, is inspired by the spirit of love and set in a flower garden with the dancers as bees pursuing one another from one flower to the next.
